Today we arrived in Vienna at mid-day. We have half of the day in this marvelous European capital, so we chose to forgo the bike or bus tour in favor of touring on our own.
We escaped the boat shortly after noon and headed to town on a tram and subway. As usual, we got lost immediately. A charming older women insisted on showing us to our subway after we missed it.
We did a walking tour around the old city. I have pictures of St. Steven's Cathedral, the Hof Palace and various sites around the city. The grandiose buildings are hard to capture. After the walking tour we went on a tour of the Hapsburg royal palace and tjentook a tram tour around the city. We listen to a podcast narration on a cell phone while the local Vieneese watched us in wonder.
We ended the action packed day by having dinner at very local establishment, rather than a tourist place. The restaurant was 400 years old and known to be where the Turkish soldiers would eat and drink before going out to pillage the countryside.
We made it back to the boat in time to make the 10pm departure, but just barely.
